Admiral’s Café
Admiral’s Café Colwall opened in May 2019 and provides a café-style meeting place for those living with dementia (both those with a diagnosis and their carers). Initially for Colwall villagers the café has grown and now has “customers” from Ledbury, Malvern and adjacent villages. The café also welcomes those who are living alone either through bereavement or because their partner is in residential care.
The cafés are named after the Admiral Nurses who offer support to those living with dementia and their families. These nurses are supported professionally by Dementia UK and they were named by the family of this charity’s founder, Joseph Levy CBE BEM. Joseph had vascular dementia and was known affectionately as “Admiral Joe” because of his love of sailing.
The café is free to attend but relies on donations and a monthly raffle. It also receives support from the Parish Council and Church. It is a volunteer-led initiative and training is provided to those who would like to join the team.
Join us between 11am and 1pm on the first Thursday of each month at Colwall Village Hall (Mill Lane, Colwall WR13 6EQ).
Hot drinks and nibbles are provided. There is time for conversation and socialising and an activity is usually provided. Previous activities have included afternoons at local venues, visits from children who attend Colwall CofE Primary school, hand bell ringing, communal singing and morris dancing from So Xsighted Morris.
‘You can just just turn up’, says Marcus Allen who is helping to run it in Colwall. ‘If you have dementia, the outside world can sometimes be a frightening place. The idea of the café is to offer somewhere you can feel secure and comfortable.’
There is no need to book, you can just come along.
